Social Networking Traffic

Wow, what a crazy five years it's been on the Internet. The rise of the traffic titans, the Social Networking sites. I was talking to a friend the other day and we were just astounded at the renaissance in traffic sources over the last five years and how marketers have adopted to try to garnish wages from them.

The beauty of social networking sites is their simplistic and effective means of targeting demographics without a lame census survey making an appearance. They're a proven source of ad revenue for advertisers and a great playground for guerrilla marketers on the prowl for targeted traffic.

Making MySpace, YourSpace

MySpace, the mother of social networking sites, has millions of users and ranks in the top 5 highest trafficked sites on the Internet. You've heard of it. My Grandfather has heard of it. My 8 year old neighbor has heard of it. They're everywhere and there's no signs of slowing down.

So how exactly do you attract the interest of MySpacers within your market? Just by participating in their community! If you take a look at the anatomy of the social networks, the key in building your network is having lots of friends. This allows for broader communication and higher trafficked profile pages.

Build your profile page wisely

Traditional advertising has taken a turn for the worst, no one wants to look at a MySpace profile that looks like an infomercial. While movie studios might be able to pull it off, as a guerrilla marketer you can't. Placement for your ads has to be latent. If you're unfamiliar with the term latent it means not overly obvious that they exist. A few clickable graphic links back to your web site where you can capture the potential lead and advertise to them will do just fine and extend to lifespan of your profile. When it's not obvious you're advertising you won't get the CHOP from the administrators.

Add friends – lots of them.

There are several applications out there to automatically add friends to your profiles, none of which I recommend. Manually search for and request friend ads from people within your desired demographic and do it slowly. Too many friend requests will appear as Spam in the all seeing eyes of MySpace administrators.

Replicate, replicate, replicate

It's a numbers game. While you can't have an excessive amount of friend add requests per day from one account there's no reason you can't have multiple accounts. Before you go nuts be sure to read their terms and conditions as they're always changing. Five profiles earning five friends a day with 20 profile view per profile means several clicks and hopefully new leads.
